Moyes responds to question about West Ham’s ties to Man United player
West Ham boss David Moyes declined to discuss links with Jesse Lingard on Friday but did not deny any interest in the Man United striker. [Whufc.com].
Lingard, of course, had a hugely successful couple of months on loan at London Stadium in the second half of last season.
He scored nine goals and collected five assists in 16 appearances, sending the Hammers back to sixth place and winning an England recall.
The 29-year-old has played less than 300 minutes of first-team football since returning to Old Trafford this summer, and he is linked with an out this month.
Unsurprisingly, even though he scored a winner against them in September, the Hammers are one of the clubs credited with interest in his services. [Express].
Yet when asked about the ties on Friday afternoon, Moyes declined to talk about anything other than Lingard’s contribution last season, out of respect for his current club.
“I wouldn’t talk about players from other clubs because it’s wrong to do so,” he said. [Whufc.com].
“Jesse is a Manchester United player and it’s not for me to talk about him. We really appreciate everything he did for us last year.
Some West Ham fans have reportedly hoped for confirmation that their club are doing everything possible to bring Lingard back.
However, while Moyes chose not to go this route, he certainly didn’t rule out a decision.
While football sequels rarely tend to live up to the originals, it would be a major surprise if he didn’t explore the possibility of re-signing Lingard, given his contribution last season.
It has been reported that the Hammers may have to pay something in the order of £ 10million to get him to a permanent deal this month [Express], which represents a large sum for a player who has only six months left on his contract.
But if Lingard brings in the X factor that helps them defy the odds and make it into the top four, it would definitely be a worthwhile investment.
