Caleb Swanigan, former Purdue star and 2016-17 All-American first-team consensus, died Monday, the school said. The family confirmed the death. He was 25 years old.

Swanigan was also the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2017, following a season in which he averaged 18.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists for a Purdue team that went 27 -8 and made the Sweet 16. Swanigan, a former McDonald’s All-American, grew his dominant sophomore campaign to an early entry into the NBA draft. He was selected 26th overall in 2017 by the Portland Trail Blazers, where he played for two seasons.

The 6-foot-9 forward spent time in the G League before returning to play 10 games with the Sacramento Kings in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He ended his playing career with the Trail Blazers, playing another 20 games for Portland during the 2019-20 season. Swanigan’s battle with weight gain eventually led him to quit basketball. He pursued a calling in rap music afterwards – long before that he lovingly took on the nickname ‘Biggie’ – although Swanigan also gained notoriety for his ongoing health issues and a drug charge in 2021 , after his departure from the NBA.

“The Purdue basketball family is deeply saddened and devastated by the loss of Caleb Swanigan,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said in a statement. “Caleb was a very thoughtful person and a gentle soul who excelled on and off the pitch. He made a huge difference in the lives of everyone he touched and he will be sorely missed.”

Swanigan died of natural causes, according to the Fort Wayne television station WANE, which cited the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

Swanigan was open about his unstable situation growing up. His father was a crack user. He had flare-ups where he lived in homeless shelters five times, according to a 2017 ESPN story, and also fluctuated between living in Indiana and Utah, where his mother lived. Swanigan’s father, Carl, died of diabetes-related causes in 2014, before Caleb enrolled at Purdue. Swanigan’s path to Purdue was set when former Purdue star Roosevelt Barnes, who coached Swanigan in grassroots basketball, took him in and became his tutor in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Barnes adopted Swanigan as he entered his teens. It was this decision that set Swanigan down the basketball path that turned him into one of the top high school prospects in the nation.

“During his NBA career, Swanigan has worked extensively with Portland-area youth and FoodCorps to promote healthy eating habits in schools and eliminate childhood hunger,” Purdue’s statement read.

Swanigan’s former teammates were quick to take to social media to express their grief, including Vincent Edwards, who played with Swanigan at Purdue and posted footage of their time together as Boilermakers.

I’m the type of person who always needs background music, and I usually use my record player for occasional listening when I’m cooking, cleaning, or just existing around the house. Several of my friends already had record players they liked when I started looking for mine, and I’ve seen them all over social media over the past few years (vinyl sales have hit $1 billion in 2021, their biggest year since 1986). A few TikTok videos and Pinterest photos later, I gave in and bought my own turntable early last year: the Crosley Cruiser Deluxe. A year later, I’m still as obsessed as when it came out of the box.

I knew early in the buying process that a record player is a worthwhile investment for many people, but I wasn’t willing to spend hundreds of dollars (or even thousands) on a device that I would use for background noise. (Actually, I couldn’t either.) I wanted something stylish, functional, and affordable, and I wasn’t too concerned about crystal-clear sound. The Cruiser Deluxe fits my criteria to a T: it’s a very basic record player that sounds great, looks great, and costs less than $100.

The Cruiser Deluxe is a semi-automatic record player – in our guide to turntables, the experts told us they’re great for beginners (like me) as they automatically stop once they reach the end of the disk. I can play an album and forget about it without the risk of scratching the record – a manual record player, on the other hand, requires you to gently lift the tone arm, otherwise it will continue to spin. I have to manually position the tonearm where I want the record to start playing, but it manages to move down smoothly with a little lever (and gives me the freedom to start my album on whatever track I want).

My favorite thing about this record player is that it’s completely portable – not only is it more compact and lightweight than other record players I’ve seen on the market (weighing just 5.5 pounds and fitting nicely on my dresser), but it also features a sleek briefcase design that I can easily carry via the handle. The portability coupled with the all-in-one look of the turntable makes it a practical option for me – it has built-in features such as speakers, pitch control and a cartridge that I might have otherwise had to be purchased separately. Its built-in Bluetooth function also adds some versatility since I can play any music wirelessly from my smartphone through the turntable’s speakers as long as the player itself is plugged in (and the included RCA outputs allow me to hook it up to any external speaker too).

Granted, the Crosley record player isn’t the one our experts recommend. In fact, they explicitly advised against buying an all-in-one record player, noting that it can damage your records and generally lacks good sound quality. But as a beginner, I found it to work just fine for my casual listening experience: the speakers are loud enough to be heard throughout my apartment without any additional accessories, and it fits all my standard size discs ranging from 7 inch to 12 inch. in diameter (all still in good condition a year later). The sound quality may be lacking compared to more expensive models, but the price is worth it for a beginner, in my opinion.

Other turntables to buy

Whether you’re looking for a better quality turntable or a cheaper turntable to buy, here are some popular options, including those we’ve previously recommended.

Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB turntable

If you’re serious about your records and looking for a premium option, this manual turntable from Audio-Technica features a built-in preamp, adjustable S-shaped tonearm and a USB function that helps you convert your recordings into digital audio files. . It’s a direct-drive turntable, which means it’s powered by magnets with the motor sitting just under the platter (where the record sits), allowing it to quickly pick up speed expected, experts have already told us. However, our experts suggested buying a new cartridge if you opt for this model, as the one that comes with it is of inferior quality.

Victrola Vintage Portable Suitcase Record Player

This turntable from Victrola looks a lot like Crosley’s – it features a similar suitcase design, Bluetooth capability, and an auto-stop switch that stops spinning records once they’ve finished playing. Writer Zoe Malin said her brother loves this budget turntable because it’s small enough to fit on his desk and connects to any speaker using the stereo RCA outputs.

Denon DP-300F turntable

The Denon DP-300F turntable is a fully automatic turntable that lowers the tonearm and stops running when the record is finished – all you have to do is load your record onto the platter and leave the machine do the rest. It’s slightly heavier at 12 pounds, which can help keep turntable vibrations from becoming audible, Thomas Rasmussen, the owner of Rasmussen Turntable Repair, previously told us in our guide to record players. Editor Morgan Greenwald owns this turntable and said that while she had to buy the speakers separately, she’s a fan of the sound quality and sleek design.

Technics SL-1500C Direct Drive Turntable System

If you’re looking to splurge on a high-quality model, the experts told us that the Technics turntable system is one of the best turntables on the market – like the Audio Technica, it’s a manual model with a motor direct-drive, but it includes an Auto Lifter function that automatically lifts the cartridge when the tonearm reaches the end of the record. It’s a heavier turntable option (weighing in at 21 pounds), which increases its “rumble rating,” meaning it’s less likely to pick up vibrations from external movements, according to Rassmussen.

John Williams’ soundtrack for the star wars is Australia’s favorite music for the screen, according to the most popular Classic 100 poll of all time.

The top 100 as voted by the public in Australia and around the world covers beloved music for film, TV and video games across genres and generations. Choices ranged from period dramas like Sense and sensitivity (#92) to video game music including The Legend of Zelda (#23), classics like psychology (#84), and recent blockbusters such as 2021 Dunes (#73).

Audiences shared their love of the soundtracks as they tuned in across the country. A listener found himself spending “a whole weekend listening to classical” for the first time, including a coastal walk near Broome with Interstellar screaming on the ABC Listen app. Seven-year-old Ezra was so inspired that he learned “Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Potter in anticipation of hearing his favorite music.

John Williams, who turned 90 in February, has featured in the countdown eight times, with four titles in the top 10: star wars (#1), the Harry Potter series (#4), Schindler’s list (#5), and jurassic park (#8). Howard Shore’s epic music for The Lord of the Rings the trilogy took second place, with Ennio Morricone’s much-loved score for The missionfeaturing “Gabriel’s Oboe”, in third place.

Despite being in her forties, Williams star wars the scores are a coherent and singular musical project. ABC Classic’s Screen Sounds presenter Dan Golding described the music’s timeless appeal: “John Williams’ music emphasizes what is emotionally familiar about this young boy who dreams of saving the galaxy. It is much more a myth than a metaphor, more Camelot that The best of worlds.”

Composer Hans Zimmer has also featured prominently in the countdown, appearing nine times, including for the 2021 Oscar-winning film Dunes. Ennio Morricone took three spots and Vangelis, who died earlier this year, appeared twice with his score for 1982’s Bladerunner (#36) and Chariots of Fire (#7).

Scores by Australian composers were also prominent, including Joff Bush’s music for hit sensation Bluey, which came in at No. 83. Nigel Westlake’s music for the baby movies (#24), Antarctic (#38), and Miss Potter (82) appeared in Countdown alongside classics like the Bruce Smeaton soundtrack for Picnic at the hanging rock (#68) and Bruce Rowland’s score for The Snowy River Man (#33), as well as the superb work of Lisa Gerrard with Hans Zimmer for Gladiator (#19). Australians Barrington Pheloung (Inspector Morse#44) and Ron Grainer (Doctor Who#12), both of whom worked primarily in the UK, were also featured.

The pandemic has seen billions of people around the world turn to movies, TV and video games for entertainment, comfort, solace and connection. This year’s Classic 100 paid tribute to the power of screen music to build our resilience during unprecedented times. This year, for the first time, voters were able to vote for soundtracks from video games and TV shows alongside film scores.

San Francisco: The Google-owned YouTube Music web app adds a new feature that makes it easier for users to manage songs in bulk, especially when adding them to specific playlists.

As one Reddit user noticed, the music streamer’s web interface now offers the ability to select multiple songs from list views, Android Central reports.

The new feature makes it easier to select multiple items that users want to include in a playlist.

Users can do this by clicking the new checkbox on the right side of a song in a list. Hovering over a title should bring up the checkbox and they can manage as many items as they want.

The YouTube Music web app interface will then show a few options at the bottom, including the option to add selected songs to a playlist or play them after the current play. An overflow menu also appears next to these options, the report says.

Prior to the most recent change, users had to manually add a song to a playlist by clicking the three-dot menu next to the thumbs up/down icons.

The overflow menu contains several options, such as adding a song to the queue or to a specific library.

However, the feature doesn’t seem to be widely available at the moment. It is currently only visible to a small number of users.

In the age of streaming, music has become the fuel for the internet’s endless white noise machine. Lo-fi ambient music—much of it extracts and dilutes hip-hop’s most engaging sounds—has become a big business for wellness companies selling increased productivity through sound curation; platforms like Spotify and Apple use it as a feed for playlists with names like “Apply Yourself” and “Back to Work.” (For those who prefer the more traditional relaxing sounds, there are also white noise podcasts, which allow their owners to raise thousands of dollars a month for delivering static and nature sounds.) Between the Lofi Girl channel on YouTube and apps like Portal, Tide and Brain.fm now have an endless stream of music for passive listening, mostly to be ignored as it quietly affects your sanity. It is inactive music, intended to isolate an active mind, to help the listener to concentrate, sleep and live better.

These are the goals guiding electronic singer-songwriter James Blake’s new album ‘Wind Down’, created in collaboration with AI-powered app Endel, which collects data about individual users from devices such as the Apple Watch and generates personalized ambient music in real time. (The company claims to “deliver faster, more consistent focus” than pre-programmed music from streaming providers.) Blake, best known for his moody, self-titled debut from 2011 and Mercury Prize-winning “Overgrown , from 2013, is only the latest artist to “collaborate” with Endel; others include R.&B. singer-songwriter Miguel, avant-pop artist Grimes, and minimalist techno musician Plastikman. “Wind Down”, created by processing Blake’s original voice and music through Endel’s artificial intelligence technology, is intended to prepare the listener for bed. Composed almost entirely of chiming keys, airy synths and disembodied vocals, the album sounds like much of Blake’s solo music, but without structure, meaningful phrasing, drum programming or lyrics. The listening experience is soothing, meandering and trippy, like navigating the strange architecture of the smartphone game Monument Valley.

Endel cites ambient music pioneer Brian Eno as inspiration, who is credited with coining the term “generative music” to describe compositions that iterate and evolve over time. Over a decade ago, Eno, along with musician and software designer Peter Chilvers, created a kind of precursor to Endel called Bloom, which allows users to create a cascade of tones by touching a screen. With settings to listen or create, the app allows the user to interact with auto-generated music – each new press produces a chime note of a different pitch, depending on where the screen is touched , which repeats in the system shift sequence. Even when left alone, the app continues to generate its endless composition. If Bloom makes music that reacts to touch, Endel makes music that reacts to all other available data. But whereas Bloom – and similar Eno-Chilvers projects such as Trope and Scape – were envisioned as a tool for musical discovery and creation, Endel sees music as secondary to what sound can provide to the body: the artists only serve as inputs. “It’s fascinating to hear how my music blends with Endel’s AI science-based sounds,” Blake says in a bit of ad copy. “I think we’ve come up with something that’s not just beautiful or even meaningful, but really practical.”

The sounds recorded on this album are not songs per se, but they have surprising reflections of melodic elegance. There are silent, buzzing passages interrupted by loud vocals and busy riffs that streak like marbling. The album’s fifth track, titled “5th Soundscape”, is representative of the album’s balance of calm and activity: a synth line holds like the horizon as piano arpeggios dance along the surface. . The record is soothing and even pretty, but it also has a certain side to it that simulates restlessness more than rest. The highly functional feel-good music is often arranged to hang on from a distance, never threatening to disrupt, but these scintillating tracks seem to be coming closer and closer, like a rolling fog.

Blake’s art style is well suited to the sounds of nightfall. It’s easy to hear the stuff of these soundscapes in the spectral voice and piano intro of a song like “Radio Silence,” from Blake’s 2016 album “The Color in Anything,” or the muffled coos and undertones of “Life Is Not the Same,” in last year’s “Friends That Break Your Heart.” All of the soundscapes of “Wind Down” feel slightly haunted in this way, and even when they take the listener into a meditative space, they never completely let go of the sense that the world looms beyond.

Yet, listening to “Wind Down,” one gets the feeling that the soul of Blake’s music has been severed from the machine and drifts away from itself. Instead of layered, propelling songs, these arrangements seem suspended in the air, detached from any semblance of personality and instinct. While often charming, it’s by far Blake’s least interesting album – and it’s disturbing that it’s on purpose. Projects like this exemplify one of the most concerning developments of the streaming age: a pivot away from song-based music that stimulates the senses and toward formless music that dissolves into the atmosphere. In some ways, Endel and his collaborations seem contrary to Eno’s vision for generative music – instead of a system that creates unique, haunting music with something akin to human intelligence, here we have the music of a human artist, stripped of spontaneity and transmuted into data. .
